Abstract

The renewal of contemporary Portuguese poetry is frequently associated with the use of a combination of different genres and different discourse typologies. Taking this into account, as well as the interaction of poetry and prose in the work of poets such as Ana Hatherly, Herberto Helder and Manuel António Pina, this paper aims to assess the extent to which Japanese koans may have provided a reference to innovative writing for the Portuguese poetry of the 60s and 70s.
